SR Sultan Hassan Bangar pada asalnya dikenali sebagai Sekolah Melayu Bangar pada tahun 1928. Kedudukannya berdekatan dengan Masjid Utama Mohd Salleh yang masih ada sekarang. Ianya adalah sebuah sekolah yang tertua di daerah ini. Sekolah ini terletak di atas tapak keluasan 12 ekar persegi di tengah-tengah Pekan Bangar.

Pada tahun 1956 sekolah ini bertukar nama kepada Sekolah Melayu Sultan Hassan, berpindah ke tapak dan bangunan baru. Bangunan ini sekarang digunakan oleh Jabatan Sekolah-Sekolah Daerah Temburong.

Kemudian bertukar lagi kepada Sekolah Rendah Sultan Hassan Bangar dalam tahun 1987 dan juga berpindah kepada bangunan baru blok akun. Bangunan ini tidak lagi dipakai setelah mengalami kerosakan.

Dalam tahun 1996, Sekolah Rendah Sultan Hassan berpindah lagi ke bangunan bekas Sekolah Menengah Sultan Hassan dan digunakan sehinggalah sekarang.

Cikgu Haji Jaafar bin Maun adalah Guru Besar pertama menerajui sekolah ini bermula tahun 1928. Seramai 21 orang Guru Besar telah memimpin sekolah ini sehinggalah sekarang tahun 2009, SR Sultan Hassan diterajui oleh Cikgu Dayang Yusnani binti Ampuan Haji Yusof dan Penolong Guru Besar Cikgu Rohayati binti Abd Kadir.

Pada cuti penggal kedua tahun 2009, Cikgu Rohayati binti Abd Kadir telah berpindah tempat bertugas ke Sekolah Rendah Negalang sebagai Guru Besar sekolah tersebut dan pengganti beliau di Sekolah rendah Sultan Hassan ialah Cikgu Rouziyah.

Pada 18 Februari 2008, Sekolah Rendah Sultan Hassan menerima kemasukan seramai 14 orang guru, 3 orang kakitangan dan 140 orang murid dari Sekolah Rendah Bokok. Ini berikutan sekolah tersebut telah ditutup kerana tidak selamat lagi untuk diduduki setelah dilanda banjir teruk.

Kini keramaian murid-murid sekolah ini telah pun meningkat dari 153 orang kepada 295 orang. Bilangan bilik darjah turut bertambah dari 9 buah kepada 15 buah bagi menampung keramaian tersebut.

Bagi keselesaan pengajaran dan pembelajaran, bilik-bilik darjah pada masa ini dalam proses pengubahsuaian secara berperingkat, begitu juga dengan beberapa struktur bangunan juga dalam proses pemuliharaan.
